4 Content Marketing Mistakes and How to Fix Them

The trends of content marketing are constantly changing and thoughts are being molded by the drivers in the content marketing world. Keeping up with news and consistently producing quality content can get difficult. You may be suffering from a dip in your viewers or leads in general and this could be because of the content you are sharing. Megan Totka has come up with a few reasons why your content isn’t reaching its fullest potential and how to fix them!

1. No strategy

After building and trying different strategies to market your business, you may have discovered that content marketing is a very effective way to reach your target audience. It may become exhausting trying to run your day-to-day activities while also writing enticing content. Dwindle down to your posts maybe once a week then twice a month or even stop completely.

Try to take a step back and think about why you are producing content in the first place. Develop a schedule and make goals. If coming up with content gets difficult, think about what issues your customer may face. Sites like Quora are a great resource to find out what your target audience may be looking for, just simply search for keywords in your field and you may find issues to write about. For scheduling try using tools like Trello that set deadlines and reminders for your writers. This will organize everything in one place so you don’t have to scramble for articles.

2. Who Are You Trying To Reach?

If you’re not reaching the right audience then what good is your content? Make sure you are writing about relevant topics that have to do with your target audience. If you own an online retail shop for women between the ages of 24-35 it may be better to write on topics like “How to put the perfect interview outfit together” instead of “Seventeen magazine’s top back to school trends” although this may seem helpful, your audience is probably well out of school.

So how can we better target our audience? Get to know them! This is crucial! Talk to your sales team, what do your customers say, what do they like or dislike, how do they think you can approve. In the end you must have a solid understanding of your audience to be successful. With a little digging you really may find insights you have never considered.

3. Utilize Social Media

After researching and developing a strategy for producing the content you may hit another bump in the road: promotion. It’s not enough to post it on your blog and tweet about it once, this is another step that takes consistency. You should definitely be sharing on all your social media platforms which include Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc… After you’ve done the initial sharing try scheduling the articles at later times to reach readers who may not have come across your article the first time. Don’t forget about emailing either, it’s still one of the most effective ways to promote your material.

Also look out for people that may have liked or retweeted your post, give them a shout out and build that connection!

4. Analyze Your Content

After you’ve built your content strategy you must track your content. Analyze it using whatever tool you’re using to post. We at Near Me like to use Hubspot. Take a look at what topics are most popular and write more about things related to them. If your hosting site let’s you build campaigns, you can look into what months were more successful or what topics did the worst/best. All these insights will help you produce better content and gives you more clarity as to what you should write about.

If you have fallen short on any of these topics, don’t fret! You can definitely bring your content up to the standards you want. One last tip, don’t forget to share previous related blogs to keep your readers reading!
