Get What You Want When You Want It With Operator

In a recent article by Josh Constine (@joshconstine) introduces the public to a new service where you can send an instant message asking for something, and they’ll do the grunt work of placing your order and getting it delivered to you. That’s the idea for Uber co-founder Garret Camp‘s (@gmc) new startup Operator that’s still in stealth, according to sources with direct knowledge of the app. You might have heard of a similar startup called Magic that recently blew up. But Magic was slapped together atop SMS over a weekend as a side project of Y Combinator company Bettir.

It's no secret that people want what they want when they want it, millenials especially thrive off of immediate gratification. Uber has been a huge contributor to on-demand services with ride-sharing, and now Garret Camp is taking it a step further by giving people the opportunity to get any request they have, delivered to their front door. The collaborative economy has taken the industry by storm with companies such as Airbnb,  AmazonFresh, Etsy and of course Uber.

Operator's services won’t only serve the people, but local businesses as well. It allows companies to reach more consumers, therefore increasing sales and feeding the economy. "As CEO of Operator, Robin Chan (@robinchan) has an enormous opportunity to create a logistics layer between customers and the retailers and services they buy from. What Uber did creating a tech-powered logistics layer for transportation, Operator could do for lots of other businesses."

There are plenty of collaborative economy sceptics, with the notion that this new business structure is evading tax responsibilities, while lining the pockets of the billionaires that are creating such services. We think that this only scrapes the surface. Are the creators of these extremely successful companies bringing in a lot of income? Yes, there is no doubt about that. What isn't being touched upon is the millions of jobs being created, which increases fiscal flow among countless businesses.

Let's go over the pro's of Camp and Chan’s new creation:

  • Once you’ve messaged in your request, a human operator will then do the research to find the best possible solution for your problem and provide you with some options.

  • The whole process feels personal, as you’ll see a profile photo of whichever Operator you’re working with.

  • If you’re trying to buy something from a popular store, a source says Operator sometimes offers in-app product catalogues that you can choose things from, and can remember what you like.

Overall, Operator will fill the need for on-demand services. Whether people like it or not, this is where the economy is shifting, because it is what the people want. If you don't offer something that can be received at the touch of a button they will find someone who will.
