The Power of “And” in Facebook Advertising

timthumbAre you dipping your toes into the Facebook advertising arena?

If so, you’re probably wondering how to target the most engaged, most active users in your niche.  Let me give you an example…

Let’s say you are Rusty Surfboards, and you want to get targeted ads in front of surf fanatics…

rusty

You could target the 239k fans of Laird Hamilton…

laird

Or you could target the 251k fans of the Surfrider Foundation…

surfrider

Or the 251k fans of Surfing Magazine…

surfingmag

You could target the fans of any of these fan pages and maybe, just maybe, you will be lucky and make a buck or two. This type of targeting uses “OR” logic, and it is native to the Facebook ads platform and Power Editor.

Or you could target people who LOVE surfing. These super fans are people that like Laird Hamilton AND the Surfrider Foundation or Laird Hamilton AND Surfing Magazine or fans that like all three of these pages listed above.

What is Audience Intersection?

The technical term for this type of ad targeting is audience intersection, and it is available from several Facebook API partners, including Adespresso (who we interviewed in one of our upcoming podcasts).

Per Adespresso, “This method of targeting the intersection of multiple interests can be extremely useful to target only users that are really interested in your product/market.”

Let’s get back to the example…

Rusty Surfboard’s Super Fan

If Rusty Surfboards were to advertise to the audience intersection of the 3 fan pages, the result could be 50,000 super fans…

intersection

These super fans LOVE surfing, and the theory is they are much more likely to purchase a high quality surfboard.

Conclusion

If you are launching a Facebook Ads campaign, I strongly encourage you to use a tool that allows you to do audience intersection targeting. The results will be a lower customer acquisition cost and higher ROI and profits.

And profits means more time for “hanging 10.”
